When is the best time to child proof your home?
Your baby will start to crawl any time between 6 and 9 months and I would advise any parent to be ready with all the childproofing in place before that happens. Baby’s may start shuffling along on their bottoms before they start to crawl and you can definitely count on them going to the one spot you don’t want them to be. When to child proof your home? The best time is before baby can move around independently.
Start with the first thing your baby will be able to reach and work up from there.
Electrical Plug Sockets
If there is one thing you can count on in this world it is that your baby will try to stick his fingers into a light socket. It is easy and inexpensive to foil him on this endeavor.
You can use a plug that goes into the socket and has a flat face on it so there are no holes for your little one to put his fingers into.
Your Video Recorder
I have not been able to find anything that will prevent baby putting his toast into your DVD or video player so your best move is put it out of his reach. Just remember he will soon be pulling himself up and will be able to reach more things so be sure to plan ahead.
Gates On Steps and Stairs
It is always a good idea to have this done well ahead of time. You will be amazed how fast baby can move once he gets mobile even on his bottom. It is better to have everything in place before then.
There may be rooms in your house you want to keep baby out of for whatever reason. Use the gates on doors into those rooms if you can’t just close the door.
If there is anything hazardous to baby such as small objects he can choke on then it is best to keep baby away from them. Sometimes it is best to keep baby confined to one small area of the floor where you can make sure there is nothing on the floor that he can put in his mouth.
Child Proof Your Kitchen
- When cooking turn your saucepan handles in so they can’t be reached and pulled off onto a curious child. Far too many curious little ones have been badly scalded this way.
- Make sure electrical cords are well out of reach. A dangling cord is a great temptation to any curious little one.
- Put child proof catches on you cupboards and drawers. If he gets into your pantry he can make an awful mess with what he finds there.
- Keep knives, vegetable peelers, scissors and any other sharp objects well out of reach.
Child Proof Bathroom
Of all the hazards in your house the kitchen and the bathroom are at the top of the list. The bathroom is one room that baby should stay out of.
Dad’s razor might look like fun to baby and there is soap to eat, aftershave to drink, shampoo to drink and even toothpaste to eat.
On the off chance baby finds out how to turn a tap on there is a very real risk of him getting scalded.
Baby’s are always attracted to water and a baby can drown in only a couple of inches of water.
Child Proof Windows
It is nice to have babies cot under the window where he can get a nice breeze but small tots have been known to climb onto a window sill and fall. A good strong security screen will keep him safe.
Hopefully your child will always be safe from the predators out there and good solid screens will put your mind at rest and protect baby and the whole family.
Baby Proofing Home
Every parent wants to keep their baby safe and baby proofing your home is the very first step. When you look around your home check all the things that will take your baby’s eye. If it is colorful, if it is moving , if it is shiny he will be attracted to it.
Anything on the floor will go straight in his mouth. Babies are curious about the world around them. It is all brand new to them and they want to touch it and taste it and learn about it. What seems everyday to you will be exciting and new for baby so when you are checking your house to remove temptation from baby’s way try to see it through his eyes.
A Final Word About Toys
Some toys are hazardous to your baby so when buying a toy for and little one make sure there are no button eyes that might come off. Toys with little wheels that could come off and become a choking hazard.
Children have choked on things like that or even worse, inhaled it into their lung.
You often hear of toys being recalled because they have some sort of toxic material in them so be very careful when looking at toys.
Keeping Baby Safe
This is the primary concern of every parent and all the products you need to secure cupboards and possessions to make them child proof are available everywhere. Regardless of all the safety measure you put in place the main thing needed to keep your baby safe is your vigilance and common sense.
If you are unsure about something then put it somewhere away from your baby.
