People often ask Why Is Drinking Water Important? The human body needs water to live. Dehydration can be deadly. That is why we need to encourage our children to drink water.
Everyone, including your bottle fed baby needs water to survive. Our bodies need water to control our temperature and blood pressure, to keep our bowels and bladder functioning so they can remove the toxins from out bodies. All of our bodies cells, tissues and organs depend on getting enough water to keep us functioning at our optimum level.
Keeping hydrated by drinking water is not rocket science. If you are worried you or your children are not drinking enough water then just check your urine output. If your baby is not passing urine then give him some water. If urine is clear or pale yellow and not dark then you have nothing to worry about.
If you aim for drinking 8 glasses of 8 ozs (225 ml) per day then you should have no problems with your hydration. Remember that amount is a guide, not a rule, as people have different needs. Some perspire more heavily than others and will need more water.
If your baby is bottle fed then you need to offer water between bottles to keep him hydrated.
The Truth About Dehydration
Dehydration is not rare. Many people have mild dehydration and don’t realize it. If you feel tired and lack energy you may be suffering from low-grade dehydration. Quite often when you get a dull headache a glass of water will relieve it.
Constipation, flatulence, poor digestion, bloating are all signs of mild or low-grade dehydration. To digest our food properly our gastric juices need water to help them digest our food and remove waste from our bodies.
To maintain hydration and help lose weight drinking a glass of water before every meal will get your body functioning well and help your weight loss.
Eating a healthy diet will not only help you stay hydrated it will also help you maintain a healthy weight. When baby starts on solids add healthy foods into his diet. Fresh fruit and vegetables are always the best choices as they can be grown or bought chemical free and have the vitamins and minerals your body needs. As a rule of thumb avoid anything that has been altered in any way.
Cultivating good healthy eating habits in your baby early will give him the best start in life. His food preferences will follow what you feed him as a toddler and if you give him healthy foods and drinks it will keep him healthy later in life.
Don’t Wait Till You Are Thirsty
Thirst is a bit like the oil light in your car. When it comes on your car needs oil immediately. It is the same with thirst. Your body is telling you to drink water right now because you are getting dehydrated. Don’t wait until you are thirsty to have a glass of water. Drink before you get thirsty.
You may drink quite a lot of fluid during the day. Things like tea, coffee, sacrificially sweetened drinks or alcohol are not a substitute for water. Tea and coffee have a diuretic affect on the body and will cause you to lose more fluid. Use moderation when drinking these types of fluids and stick to water to hydrate your body.
You Can Drink Too Much Water
Too much water can cause problems. If you drink excessive amounts of water it can cause loss of electrolytes that your body needs to maintain its balance or homeostasis. A condition called hyponatremia can result when the body is losing sodium over a period of time.
An imbalance of electrolytes can cause confusion, loss of appetite, headaches and lethargy. Anyone suffering from severe diarrhea and vomiting can cause loss of sodium. It is important to note children can also lose too much sodium and may need to have electrolytes during their illness.
When You Don’t Like The Taste Of Your Tap Water
Many people, especially children complain about the taste of tap water. This can be because of the chemicals that are added to water to kill any bacteria that might cause people to get sick. The best way to get rid of that taste is to bet a good water filter.
There are dozens of water filters on the market and some work better than others. The one I use and always recommend imitates mother natures way of filtering out chemicals and getting rid of those tastes in the water. My preferred water filter is Water Co Bio Mineral Pot Ace 1.5 L Filter Jug.
