Why Is Drinking Water Important

People often ask Why Is Drinking Water Important?  The human body needs water to live.   Dehydration can be deadly.  That is why we need to encourage our children to drink water.

Why Is Drinking Water Important

The Truth About Drinking Water.

Everyone, including your bottle fed baby needs water to survive.  Our bodies need water to control our temperature and blood pressure, to keep our bowels and bladder functioning so they can remove the toxins from out bodies.  All of our bodies cells, tissues and organs depend on getting enough water to keep us functioning at our optimum level.

Keeping hydrated by drinking water is not rocket science.  If you are worried you or your children are not drinking enough water then just check your urine output.  If your baby is not passing urine then give him some water.  If urine is clear or pale yellow and not dark then you have nothing to worry about.

If you aim for drinking 8 glasses of 8 ozs (225 ml) per day then you should have no problems with your hydration.  Remember that amount is a guide, not a rule, as people have different needs.  Some perspire more heavily than others and will need more water.

If your baby is bottle fed then you need to offer water between bottles to keep him hydrated.

The Truth About Dehydration

Dehydration is not rare.  Many people have mild dehydration and don’t realize it.  If you feel tired and lack energy you may be suffering from low-grade dehydration.  Quite often when you get a dull headache a glass of water will relieve it.

Constipation, flatulence, poor digestion, bloating are all signs of mild or low-grade dehydration.  To digest our food properly our gastric juices need water to help them digest our food and remove waste from our bodies.

To maintain hydration and help lose weight drinking a glass of water before every meal will get your body functioning well and help your weight loss.

Eat A Healthy Diet

Eating a healthy diet will not only help you stay hydrated it will also help you maintain a healthy weight.  When baby starts on solids add healthy foods into his diet.  Fresh fruit and vegetables are always the best choices as they can be grown or bought chemical free and have the vitamins and minerals your body needs.  As a rule of thumb avoid anything that has been altered in any way.

Cultivating good healthy eating habits in your baby early will give him the best start in life.  His food preferences will follow what you feed him as a toddler and if you give him healthy foods and drinks it will keep him healthy later in life.

Why Is Drinking Water Important

Don’t Wait Till You Are Thirsty

Thirst is a bit like the oil light in your car.  When it comes on your car needs oil immediately.  It is the same with thirst.  Your body is telling you to drink water right now because you are getting dehydrated.  Don’t wait until you are thirsty to have a glass of water.  Drink before you get thirsty.

You may drink quite a lot of fluid during the day.  Things like tea, coffee, sacrificially sweetened drinks or alcohol are not a substitute for water.  Tea and coffee have a diuretic affect on the body and will cause you to lose more fluid.  Use moderation when drinking these types of fluids and stick to water to hydrate your body.

You Can Drink Too Much Water

Too much water can cause problems.  If you drink excessive amounts of water it can cause loss of electrolytes that your body needs to maintain its balance or homeostasis.  A condition called hyponatremia can result when the body is losing sodium over a period of time.

An imbalance of electrolytes can cause confusion, loss of appetite, headaches and lethargy.   Anyone suffering from severe diarrhea and vomiting can cause loss of sodium.  It is important to note children can also lose too much sodium and may need to have electrolytes during their illness.

When You Don’t Like The Taste Of Your Tap Water

Many people, especially children complain about the taste of tap water.  This can be because of the chemicals that are added to water to kill any bacteria that might cause people to get sick.  The best way to get rid of that taste is to bet a good water filter.

There are dozens of water filters on the market and some work better than others.  The one I use and always recommend imitates mother natures way of filtering out chemicals and getting rid of those tastes in the water.  My preferred water filter is Water Co Bio Mineral Pot Ace 1.5 L Filter Jug.

Wow, thanks for this clear and thorough article about water intake. I know it is very important. I myself did once a waterfast for 20 days. I only drunk 4 liters (filtered) water a day without taking someting else (other juices or food). I was curing me a lot of things. What I miss here in your article is what amount of water do you recommend to take in daily?I think it would be hard to take too much water. Best regards, Nico

      Hi Nico,
If you are drinking 4 liters per day you are drinking twice the recommended amount which is 8 glasses of 250 mls. 2 liters is not a definite amount but it is what you should aim for. Some people need more especially if they are working as a laborer out in the sun playing sport.
      All the best to you.

NicoA, there was an incident here in Australia where a young lady almost died from drinking too much water. Her whole body began shutting down and she became disoriented. Fortunately a friend was with her and, although he didn’t know about too much water, he got the medics to her.

You are absolutely right Helen. People walking the Kokoda Track have died for that very reason. Drinking too much water can deplete your sodium levels and this can be fatal. That is why people need to understand that even though water is vital for good health too much water can have very bad effects. It is all about maintaining your bodies balance. 8 glasses per day or 2 liters is the recommended amount we should aim for but that can vary from person to person.

Hey Margaret, thanks for this great, informative and very interesting article about drinking water. I also know that many people underestimate the importance of drinking enough. The body really needs a lot of water to stay healthy, especially when you do a lot of sports it is crucial. Even for dieting and loosing weight drinking enough is one of the most important things.

      Hi Los,
You are right and the body does need water. So many people think soft drinks or other fluids is all they need but really, water is what they need to lose weight and stay healthy.
      Thanks for sharing your comment.

I think that this is a very good post on the importance of drinking water, because it’s good to be reminded to not let yourself become dehydrated.

I have found that dehydration can sneak up on you very quickly as I had a situation once where I ignored all the early warning signs of thirst.

Only to get into a situation that I was almost begging for a drink of water which was embarrassing but it’s something that I don’t want to experience again.

Whenever I go on a trip, I think of the availability of water and if it’s not readily available, then I will take some with me.

It really is important for our well-being to stay hydrated because if you allow yourself to be persistently dehydrated then it can seriously affect your health.

    Hi,
I have just recently started to eat healthy and drinking water more than what i have before.
As i read down your page i have come across some interesting information about bloating which was happening to me, i never knew dehydration could be the problem.
Very true about the headaches and water.
I always buy bottled water, i do hope that it is all pure as tap water always tastes tinny.
    Thank you again.

      Hi Sharond,
Drinking water will help you lose weight as it gets your body working properly. Constipation is a problem for people who don’t drink enough water. It also helps to keep our kidneys functioning. We ladies do suffer from urinary tract infections and when we do we tend to reduce the amount of water we drink. This is a big mistake. We actually need to drink more water to flush the bugs out of our urinary tract. Water has a multitude of benefits for our bodies but don’t overdo it. Aim for around 2 liters per day but if that is too much just drink as much as you can but aim for as close to 2 liters as you can.
All the best with your healthy eating. In few weeks you will really feel the benefits of your diet.
